The city where the Riviera begins
Vlorë is the city where the Albanian Riviera begins — the working port at the northern end of the coast road, where the fast motorway from Tirana runs out and the mountains take over. A day trip here is a change of pace from the beaches: a real city with a long seafront promenade, an island monastery in a lagoon, and the building where Albania declared independence. It's about 50 km north over the Llogara Pass, roughly an hour to ninety minutes, and the drive is half the appeal — take the pass for the views or the 2024 tunnel underneath for speed.
What to do
- The Lungomare. Vlorë's pride is its 3.8 km seafront promenade, a wide palm-lined esplanade perfect for a slow stroll, a coffee and an ice cream, especially in the evening.
- Zvernec Monastery. Just outside the city on the Narta Lagoon, a 13th-century Byzantine monastery sits on a small island reached by a 270-metre wooden footbridge through the water — a peaceful, photogenic half-hour.
- Museum of Independence. In the waterfront building where Ismail Qemali declared Albanian independence on 28 November 1912; entry is small (around 200 lek / €2).
- Kanina Castle. A ruined hilltop fortress above the city with wide views over the bay.
- Karaburun–Sazan. Vlorë is the launch point for boat trips to the wild Karaburun Peninsula and Sazan Island marine park — Albania's first marine protected area — a full-day excursion in its own right.
Is it worth a day trip?
It depends what you want. If you're after more beaches, you'll find better ones closer to home — Vlorë's own city beaches are ordinary by Riviera standards. But if you fancy a city day — a promenade, a bit of history, a lagoon monastery, cafés and shops a beach village doesn't have — Vlorë delivers, and the drive over Llogara is a highlight in itself.
