The UNESCO city in the forest
Butrint (Buthrotum) is the reason to make the deep south a proper day out rather than just a beach run — Albania's first UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 1992), where a whole ancient city sits half-swallowed by forest and lagoon, about 15 minutes south of Ksamil and roughly 95 km / 2 hours south of Dhërmi via the SH8 and Sarandë. It's unusual in being protected twice over: a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its ruins and, since 2003, a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance for the surrounding lagoon and its rich birdlife.
Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian layers overlap on a single walkable loop through the trees: a Greek theatre, Roman baths and mosaics, an early Christian baptistery, and a Venetian tower, all threaded through woodland beside the water. It's one of the most atmospheric ancient sites in the Balkans, and the setting — ruins tangled in green, ringed by lagoon — is as much of the draw as the archaeology.
Visiting
- Entry: 1,000 lek (about €10) for adults, 500 lek for ages 12–18, free under 12 (and 800 lek each for groups of 10+). Bring cash — cards aren't reliably accepted.
- Hours: open daily; in the April–October season roughly 08:30–20:00, with last entry around 18:00 (shorter winter hours, roughly 09:00–17:30).
- Time needed: budget about 1.5 hours for the main loop, longer if you like ruins.
- When: go earlier or later in the day to dodge the midday heat and the tour-bus crush; there's little shade in places.
Making a day of it
Pairing a morning at Butrint with an afternoon swim in Ksamil (or the reverse) is the classic southern day. Do all of it — plus Sarandë and the Blue Eye — from Dhërmi in a single day and you'll spend more time driving than sightseeing; do it from a Sarandë or Ksamil base and it's a relaxed day or two.
