The nearest airport: Tirana
Almost everyone arrives through Tirana International Airport (TIA), Albania's main gateway. From there it is roughly a 3 to 4 hour drive south-west to the coast, and then over the Llogara Pass before the spectacular descent to the sea. A hire car is the simplest way down — there is no direct airport-to-Dhërmi transfer service, and the road rewards having your own wheels.
Worth knowing for the future: a new airport at Vlorë — barely an hour up the coast — has been built to serve the Riviera directly, but as of July 2026 it still has no scheduled commercial flights. Its first services were lined up for summer 2026 — Swiss carrier Chair Airlines announced a twice-weekly Zurich route from late June, alongside Scandinavian charter flights — but these were held up or cancelled when the airport still lacked its international operating permits. Once it does open it would cut the transfer dramatically, so it's worth checking its status when you plan; for now, Tirana is the practical gateway.
Since 2024 there are two ways over the final mountain barrier: the 6 km Llogara Tunnel (opened July 2024, tolled since 2026 — 250 lek (~€2.50) one-way for a car, or 500 lek return, paid in cash at the booth) offers a faster route straight under the mountains, while the scenic Llogara Pass road over the top — cresting at about 1,027 m — remains the slower, far more memorable way, with its switchbacks and panoramic views down to the Riviera. Take the tunnel to save time, the pass for the drive of the trip.
The SH8 coast road
Dhërmi is reached along the SH8, the Riviera coast road, from one of two directions:
- From the north (via Vlorë) — head south on the SH8, up and over the Llogara Pass and down onto the Ceraunian coast — roughly 40 km from Vlorë, about an hour (a little more over the pass than through the tunnel). This is the classic approach, with the famous final descent to the Ionian.
- From the south (via Sarandë) — drive north on the SH8 along the Riviera, passing Himarë on the way. Handy if you have come up from the south or off the Corfu ferry.
In summer, buses and shared minibuses (furgons) run the coast road, including seasonal services down from Tirana and Vlorë toward Himarë and Sarandë. Off-season these services thin out, so outside the peak months a car is the practical option. One thing to plan for if you're arriving car-free: intercity buses and furgons drop you up on the main road at the top of Dhërmi, a steep couple of kilometres above the beach — so budget a downhill walk or a short local taxi to reach the shore and your accommodation.
Arriving by ferry from Corfu
If you are coming from Greece, a passenger ferry crosses from Corfu to Sarandë — fast ferries make the hop in about 30 minutes, while slower conventional ferries take roughly 70–90 minutes but cost less and some carry cars; both run frequently through the summer season. From Sarandë you continue north on the SH8 along the Riviera to Dhërmi. It is a scenic way in and pairs the Ionian islands with the Albanian coast in one trip.
Getting around once you're here
Dhërmi splits between the hillside old village and the beach below, with the shorefront strung along the coast. A car or scooter makes it easy to reach the neighbouring coves, Himarë and the Riviera's other beaches; on foot you can explore the village and its stretch of shore.
