About 80 km south via the SH8 and Sarandë, roughly 1h45–2h each way. A car is easiest; public transport south is slow with changes, and organised tours are the realistic carless option.

The islets and the water

Ksamil — Albania's most Caribbean-looking beach town, often tagged the "Maldives of Albania," all turquoise water and four tiny islets (the two nearest swimmable straight from the beach) within the Butrint National Park — sits at the far southern end of the Riviera. From Dhërmi it's roughly 80 km via the SH8 and Sarandë, but the winding, scenic road means you should budget around two hours each way. It's a long day out and back, so it works best either as a full, early-start day or as an overnight if you'd rather not rush.

Ksamil is famous for the turquoise water and the little offshore islets you can swim or wade out to, ringed by beaches and beach clubs. It's gorgeous — and in July and August it's also very busy and heavily developed, with sunbeds packed tight and prices to match. Come with realistic expectations: this is the Riviera's most popular beach town, not a hidden cove. Go early, pick a quieter stretch or an islet away from the main drag, and you'll still get the postcard water. Sunbeds are cash-in-lek, roughly 1,500–3,000 lek (€15–30) a pair.

Pair it with Butrint

The reason to make it a proper day out is Butrint — a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 15 minutes south of Ksamil, where a whole ancient city sits half-swallowed by forest and lagoon. Pairing a morning at Butrint with an afternoon swim in Ksamil (or the reverse) is the classic southern day. Within a short drive you also have Sarandë and the Blue Eye, which is why a night down south often beats a single long day trip.

Picking a beach

Ksamil isn't one beach but a cluster of small coves and the islets offshore. The central beaches by the village are the most convenient but the most crowded and priciest; head a little further and you trade amenities for space. The real prize is the swimmable islets — on a calm day you can wade or pedalo across and find far more room. Come early, bring lek in cash and water shoes, and something to shade the midday sun. For how Ksamil's sand stacks up against Dhërmi's pebbles, see Dhërmi vs Ksamil.

Questions fréquentes

How far is Dhërmi from Ksamil?+

It's roughly 80 km along the SH8 coast road, but because the road is winding and scenic you should allow about one and three-quarter hours to two hours each way, and more in peak-summer traffic. Leaving early makes the day far more relaxed and gives you time for Butrint too.

Is Ksamil worth visiting in summer?+

The water and islets are stunning, but Ksamil is the Riviera's busiest, most developed beach town, and in July and August it's crowded with pricey, packed sunbeds. Go early, choose a quieter stretch or an islet, and you'll still get the turquoise postcard — just don't expect a secluded cove.

Can you do Ksamil and Butrint in one day from Dhërmi?+

Yes, but it's a long day with about four hours of driving in total. Start early, keep your stops focused — a morning at Butrint and an afternoon swim in Ksamil, or vice versa — and you'll manage it comfortably. If you'd rather not rush, stay a night in the south instead.
