The south's main town
Sarandë is a busy, built-up resort town wrapped around a horseshoe bay at the southern end of the Riviera — not the coast's prettiest spot, but a lively base and the practical transport hub of the south. From Dhërmi it's about 70 km and 90 minutes to 2 hours down the SH8, so done as a day trip it's a lot of driving; the trick is to treat the road itself as the attraction and stop along the way.
The stops that make the drive are Himarë, Porto Palermo Castle, the hillside village of Qeparo, and Borsh — Albania's longest beach at roughly 7 km of sand-and-gravel backed by olive groves. Any two or three turn the transfer into a proper day.
What to do in Sarandë
- The promenade (Lungomare). Sarandë's long waterfront is made for an evening stroll, a coffee and people-watching.
- The Corfu ferry. Fast boats cross to Corfu in about 30 minutes — Sarandë is the mainland end of that route (see Corfu to Dhërmi ferry).
- Springboard to the south. Sarandë is the launch point for Ksamil, Butrint and the Blue Eye, all a short drive away.
- Lëkurësi Castle. A hilltop fortress above town with a restaurant and the best sunset view over the bay and, on a clear day, Corfu.
Day trip or launchpad?
Be honest about the driving: three hours in the car bracketing your time in Sarandë is a lot for one day. If the goal is just to see Sarandë, it's doable — leave early, stop at Borsh, poke around the promenade and Lëkurësi Castle, and drive back. But Sarandë really shines as a base for the deep south: if you want Ksamil, Butrint and the Blue Eye, it makes more sense to stay a night and knock them off from close range. Note that Greek and Corfu rental cars can't cross into Albania, so if you arrive on the ferry, hire in Sarandë itself.
