The Riviera's party cove
Jal Beach (Jale) is the Albanian Riviera's best-known party cove — a compact pebble bay of clear turquoise water tucked below the village of Vuno, roughly midway between Dhërmi and Himarë. By day it's a swimmable, sun-lounger beach; by mid-afternoon in high summer it turns into a low-key beach festival of music, cocktails and a young backpacker-and-camper crowd.
Out of the peak weeks it can feel like a quiet swimming cove — a curve of pebble and sand between rocky headlands, with water clarity that rivals anything across the strait in Greece. But in July and August, especially at weekends, it fills fast. The headline venue is Folie Marine, a lively beach club that sets the tone, and Jal plugs into the wider Dhërmi nightlife scene despite being a separate cove.
Sunbeds, camping and costs
Jal is a cash-in-lek beach — bring notes, as ATMs are back up in the villages. Two sunbeds and an umbrella run around 1,000 lek (€10), with some free towel space remaining. Jal is one of the few Riviera beaches with an established camping scene: social, backpacker-style sites behind the cove where a tent pitch or rental runs from around 1,400 lek (€14) a night.
Two things push Jal beyond an ordinary cove. Kala Festival, a multi-day electronic-music event, takes over the beach each summer — check the dates before you book. And Aquarium Beach, a tiny, impossibly clear cove, is reached by a coastal hike of roughly 1.5 km (30–40 minutes) south from Jal, rewarding the walk with some of the clearest snorkelling water on this part of the coast.
Getting there and when to go
Jal sits below the SH8, reached by a signed turn-off just past Vuno as you head south from Dhërmi — about 15–20 minutes by car or scooter, then a steep road down to the beach and its parking. Come midweek rather than at a weekend to dodge the day-tripper surge, and in late June or September for warm water with far more room on the pebbles. If you want something silent instead, try Palasë or a boat out to Gjipe.
